If you've ever spelled out a Wi-Fi password letter by letter to a guest, or watched someone squint at a handwritten sticky note taped to a router, a Wi-Fi QR code solves it in one scan. It's one of the most underused QR code types, mostly because people don't realise phones can read them directly.
How it actually works
A Wi-Fi QR code doesn't link to a webpage — it encodes the network name, password and security type directly in a special format that phone cameras recognise automatically. When a guest scans it with a modern phone camera (no separate app needed on iOS or recent Android versions), the phone offers to join the network immediately, password entry included.
When this is genuinely useful
- Guesthouses and short-term rentals — guests connect the moment they arrive, without a host needing to be present to read out a password.
- Cafés and co-working spaces — a printed table tent replaces a chalkboard that needs rewriting every time the password rotates.
- Offices with visitor Wi-Fi — reception can hand over a printed card instead of reading a password aloud in a room full of people.
- Home use — genuinely handy for family members who don't want to type a long password on a smart TV or console controller.
A quick security note
A Wi-Fi QR code is exactly as secure as reading the password aloud — it's not more or less exposed, since anyone who scans the printed code can join the network either way. If you're sharing this publicly (a café menu, a lobby poster), treat it the same way you'd treat writing the password on a visible board: fine for a guest network, but don't use your main household or office network's QR code as decoration where anyone passing by could scan it, if that network has access to shared drives, printers, or other sensitive devices. For that situation, set up a separate guest network first, then generate the QR code for that instead.
Making one
- You'll need three pieces of information: your network name (SSID), the password, and the security type — almost every modern router uses WPA or WPA2, which are treated the same way for this purpose.
- Generate the QR code using those three fields — no need to construct the encoded text manually, a proper QR generator builds the correct format for you.
- Print it at a reasonable size (a business-card-sized print is usually enough for close-range scanning) and place it somewhere guests will actually see it — near the entrance or on the table, not buried in a drawer.
- If you change your password later, regenerate and reprint the code — unlike a short link, the password is baked directly into this QR code, so there's no way to update the destination without creating a new one.
